Q: “WHAT KIND OF TRAINING and/or EXPERIENCE DO YOU HAVE?”

A: My own particular training, which is typical of most qualified acupuncturists and doctors of Oriental Medicine (see discussion on “Doctors of Oriental Medicine”) consisted of the following formal schooling and clinical exposure in order to qualify for the board examination to practice as a licensed acupuncturist (in the state of California which has specific regulations regarding acupuncture):

FORMAL EDUCATION:
4-1/2 Academic years (2,686 hours including 1,138 hours of clinical rounds) with a minimum of 1,548 hours of basic medical theory including biology, organic biochemistry, physics, psychology, anatomy and physiology, pathology; 436 hours of nutrition, vitamins & suppliments; history of medicine, medical terminology (30 hours); fundamental clinical sciences [for appropriate referral] such as internal medicine, pharmacology, neurology, surgery and clinical medicine including dentistry, nursing, chiropractic and homeopathy, western pharmacology and CPR (128 hours); practice management and ethics (30 hours).

In addition, there is specific Oriental Medical theory and diagnostic coursework which is vastly different from western conventional medicine, and supplements its effectiveness:

  • Meridian theory, medical massage and acupressure, medical qi gong / tai ji, five element theory, needling techniques, and moxibustion (1,050 hours);
  • Traditional herbology (435 hours including botany) & nutritional energetics, and a survey study of the classical proponents of Oriental medical theory.

CLINICAL EXPERIENCE:
Since 1991, both from my personal healing experiences and those of my clients/patients during this time period, I am confident that Oriental healing methods have an extraordinary therapeutic value, and should be better well known.

Within these broad categories, I have logged well over ten thousand hours, with more than a thousand clients, in dozens of treatment settings including:

  • a hospital’s integrative care program at a major medical center,
  • a senior care facility,
  • various community health care clinics serving low-income and homeless patients,
  • chiropractic offices,
  • and my own private practice since 1993.
